Another Delay: Entry Visa Requirement Postponed Again

Updates All Flashes
שוב דחו את הצורך באשרת כניסה לאיחוד האירופי

The Ongoing Delay: EU’s ETIAS Launch Postponed to Late 2026 The European Union has announced yet another delay in the launch of the electronic entry visa ETIAS. The system, designed to regulate the entry of travelers into EU countries, is dependent on the activation of the new Entry/Exit System (EES). However, many countries are still unprepared for its implementation. Consequently, it has been decided that the ETIAS launch will occur at the end of 2026, with an additional transition period until 2027, during which the use of the system will not be mandatory.

What is the ETIAS System?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is an electronic entry visa intended for travelers from non-EU countries who are not required to obtain a visa in advance. The system aims to enhance security at the EU’s borders and allow better monitoring of visitors to its countries. According to the original plan, the system was supposed to be operational this year, immediately following the activation of the EU’s EES and Schengen Area. However, due to a decision to implement a gradual launch of the EES over six months, starting in October 2025, it became necessary to also delay the implementation of ETIAS.

What Is Behind the ETIAS Launch Delay?

The activation of the EES requires the installation of advanced technology at all entry points to the Schengen Area, including airports, seaports, and land border crossings. Since many EU countries have not yet completed the necessary preparations, a further delay in the system’s activation was decided. As a result, ETIAS will not be able to come into effect until six months after the EES is fully operational.

How Will the System Work?

Once the system is operational, citizens from non-EU countries, including Israelis, will be required to submit an online application for travel authorization. As part of the application, they will need to provide personal details, answer security questions, and pay a fee of 7 euros. The authorization will be valid for three years or until the applicant’s passport expires, whichever comes first. Children under the age of 18 and adults over the age of 70 will be exempt from the fee but will still need to submit a formal application to obtain the authorization.

ETIAS Launch Delay: When Will This Actually Happen?

According to the EU’s announcement, the system will officially come into effect only at the end of 2026, but its use will not be mandatory until 2027. Until then, travelers can continue to enter EU countries without prior authorization. The additional delay provides more time for preparations and resolving technological challenges, but it also leaves many travelers uncertain about the upcoming changes in entry procedures to the EU in the coming years.
