Budapest: An Exciting European City with a Jewish Soul
Budapest is a city that never ceases to surprise. Amidst ancient alleys, a powerful river, and excellent shopping, there is also a moving Jewish history, superb kosher food, and an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re looking for a nearby, fascinating, and relatively inexpensive destination, Budapest should be at the top of your list.
The Jewish History of Budapest
The Jewish community in Hungary has existed for centuries, with Budapest as its beating heart. The city hosts some of the most important Jewish heritage sites in Europe, foremost among them the Great Synagogue on Dohány Street—a breathtaking structure that combines exceptional architecture with powerful history.
Next to the synagogue, you’ll find the Jewish Museum, moving memorials to Holocaust victims, and especially the “Shoes on the Danube Bank” memorial—one of the city’s most poignant sites. All these preserve the memory of Budapest’s Jewish community, which thrived until the horrors of World War II.
Today, Hungary’s capital is home to a vibrant Jewish community, including active synagogues, Jewish shops, schools, and numerous activities.
Kosher Food in the City – A Surprising Abundance
Budapest is considered a paradise for those who keep kosher. The city boasts numerous kosher restaurants—both meat and dairy—with a wide variety of flavors, and the offerings continue to grow with new establishments opening. Most restaurants are located in the Jewish Quarter, but not exclusively—there are also kosher bakeries and cafes.
Kosher observers will find great convenience here: a mikveh, kosher grocery stores, suitable infrastructure for Shabbat, and a sense of security that sometimes feels like home.
Must-See Sites and Tours in the City
Budapest is divided into two parts—Buda and Pest—separated by the Danube River and connected by beautiful bridges, including the iconic Chain Bridge. Buda Hill features the magnificent Buda Castle and the Fisherman’s Bastion—breathtaking viewpoints with unforgettable views.
In the city center, you will find the impressive Parliament building (one of the most magnificent in Europe), bustling markets, shopping boulevards, classic Austro-Hungarian style cafes, and famous thermal baths – such as Széchenyi and Gellért – where you can bathe even in winter, in warm waters under the open sky.
Public Transportation – Simple, Fast, and Affordable
Budapest excels in an excellent public transportation system. The city is connected by metro lines (4 lines), trams, buses, and local trains. The transportation is highly efficient, available throughout the day and night, and the fares are particularly reasonable.
There are daily, weekly, or single-ride tickets – and everything can be managed through user-friendly apps that provide real-time information, ticket purchasing, and quick and convenient route planning.
For those seeking a special experience – it’s worth taking tram line 2, which runs along the Danube and offers stunning views of the city at the price of a regular ride.
Close to Israel – and Easy to Reach
A flight from Israel to Budapest takes only about three hours. It is one of the closest European destinations to us – making it perfect for short vacations or weekends. There are many direct flights from Israel throughout the year, and the prices are usually affordable – especially with low-cost airlines.
There is not a big time difference – just one hour less than Israel – so no need to adjust.
In Summary
Budapest is a destination that manages to combine everything – culture, scenery, history, convenience, and accessible prices. For the religious and ultra-Orthodox traveler, it also offers many options to maintain a kosher and Jewish lifestyle without compromising on the vacation experience.
Whether it’s your first time in the city – or if you’ve visited before – there’s always a good reason to return to this special city.
