Duty-Free Returns to Haifa: IAA Issues Tender for Duty-Free Shop at Airport

After years of limited operations, Haifa Airport is making a comeback on the international aviation map, now featuring a new duty-free shop. The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) has issued a tender for the operation of a duty-free store within the airport premises, which will cover approximately 200 square meters and offer travelers a variety of tax-free products, similar to the duty-free at Ben Gurion Airport.

Duty-Free Haifa Airport: What Will the New Shop Offer?

The new store is expected to include a selection of tax-free products, including perfumes, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, electronics, sports accessories, cigarettes, cosmetics, chocolates, and sweets. Additionally, similar to the model at Ben Gurion Airport, customers will have the option to leave their purchases at the airport and collect them upon returning to Israel.

Tender Conditions and Additional Details

According to the tender issued by the IAA, the concession for operating the store will be granted for a period of up to four years, with an option for an additional 24-month extension. Potential candidates for operating the store include both Israeli and international chains with proven experience in retail, cosmetics, electrical appliances, and electronics. Proposals will be evaluated based on the percentage of turnover transferred to the IAA, following the common method in such tenders.

Haifa Airport’s Return to International Operations

Established in 1934 by the British, Haifa Airport is Israel’s oldest international airport and the third largest. After years of limited operations, the IAA has made significant infrastructure upgrades, and it is now back to full operation.

As part of the renewal, seven international flights are expected to depart daily this summer. “Air Haifa” currently operates three daily flights to Larnaca, Cyprus, one daily flight to Athens, Greece, and two additional flights to Ramon Airport in southern Israel. The company also plans to expand its operations, with a new aircraft expected to join its fleet in April 2025, enabling the opening of new routes.

Additionally, Haifa Airport serves as a crucial hub for helicopter flights to Mediterranean drilling platforms, providing transportation services for crews working on these platforms.
