Holding a European Passport? Starting Next Month, Entry Visa Required for the UK
If you hold a European passport and were counting on visa-free entry, take note of the new UK ETA requirement: if you planned a trip to London for some shopping, football, or a West End show, take note: Starting April 2, 2025, even European passport holders will be required to complete an ETA electronic form for entry into the UK. Israeli passport holders have been required to do so since the beginning of the year.
The New UK ETA Requirement: No More Free Entry
Until now, European passport holders enjoyed free entry to the UK without prior approval. However, the rules are changing—similar to what happened to Israelis earlier this year. British authorities have announced that the “adaptation period,” during which entry was allowed without the authorization, is ending soon. After the set date, anyone who does not secure an ETA in advance will simply not be allowed to enter the UK.
What Is the UK ETA Requirement, and Who Needs It?
ETA (short for Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital authorization that the UK requires from all visitors from visa-exempt countries, such as Israel or EU countries, to enter its territory. The authorization is valid for two years or until the passport expires—whichever comes first—and allows for stays of up to six months per visit.
How to Obtain an ETA and What Does It Cost?
The process is simple and quick: fill out an application through the official UK government website (GOV.UK) or via the dedicated app UK-ETA. The application fee is £10 (approximately 47 shekels), and a response is usually received shortly.
In short, if you have a European passport and plan to fly to the UK soon, make sure to obtain the authorization in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises at the airport.
