“Silence of the Lava, Song of the Wind” – A New Photography Exhibition Showcases Iceland Like Never Before
The International Convention Center in Jerusalem is currently hosting an extraordinary photography exhibition titled “Silence of the Lava, Song of the Wind”, presenting Iceland through the breathtaking lens of Miki Spitzer, an ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem photographer who has conquered international photography platforms.
Iceland Through the Camera’s Eye
The exhibition features over 30 colorful photographs and rare aerial shots from Iceland – a land of glaciers, volcanoes, and rushing waterfalls. Spitzer, who first visited Iceland by chance during the COVID-19 pandemic, fell in love with the dramatic landscape and has returned more than 15 times since, aiming to capture the perfect frame of ever-changing wild nature.
The Ultra-Orthodox Photographer Who Conquered the Photography World
Miki Spitzer (33), from an ultra-Orthodox family in Jerusalem, discovered his love for photography only at the age of 27. Since then, he has exhibited internationally, lectured in Israel and abroad, and served as a writer and photographer for “National Geographic” magazine. He describes his work as a mission – documenting the beauty of creation and bringing it to the public.
Weather Challenges and Documenting Volcanic Eruptions
Spitzer faces harsh conditions in the field: climbing mountains, extreme snowstorms, photographing volcanic eruptions, and navigating between melting glaciers. According to him, “Iceland offers nature that is constantly changing – the glaciers melt, the rivers change, and each season reveals a completely different landscape of the same place.”
Creating Art from the Air
One of the most impressive parts of the exhibition is the series of aerial photographs – images from above revealing Iceland like never seen before: dormant lava fields alongside giant glaciers, blue lakes, and mighty waterfalls. “From the air, it looks like a painting by the Creator, as if He painted with a brush on canvas,” says Spitzer.
An Exhibition with Added Value
Curated by Eran Litvin, the exhibition is part of the ongoing activities of Binyanei Hauma Jerusalem, Israel’s largest convention center, which promotes contemporary art exhibitions annually – combining modern art, sculpture, photography, and classical painting. The current exhibition was produced with the support of the Jerusalem Municipality and Wooda Printing, and is open to the public until December 2025.
