The government is expected to approve the appointment of Major General (Res.) Yiftach Ron-Tal as Chairman of the Airports Authority Council. The nomination proposal is being presented for approval by the Minister of Transport and Road Safety, Miri Regev. This four-year term will place Ron-Tal at the helm of one of Israel’s key transportation management bodies.
The decision also includes the appointment of Sigal Gabay as a member of the Authority Council on behalf of state employees, also for a four-year term. This completes the composition of the Authority Council, which includes 15 members: seven public representatives, seven state representatives, and one chairman.
Ron-Tal: Extensive Background and Public Experience
Yiftach Ron-Tal, former Commander of the Ground Forces in the IDF, retired from military service with the rank of Major General. Following his discharge, he held several senior positions in the public and business sectors, including Chairman of the Israel Electric Corporation, Chairman of the Israel Ports Company, and Chairman of Migdal Insurance Company. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Hebrew University and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Bar-Ilan University.
The government appointments committee reviewed his candidacy and determined that he meets all the criteria set forth in the Government Companies Law and the Airports Authority Law, including more than five years of managerial experience and appropriate education. Accordingly, his eligibility to serve in the position was approved.
Appointment of Sigal Gabay: Significant Strengthening from the Tourism Sector
As reported on Passport News, alongside Ron-Tal’s appointment, Sigal Gabay’s candidacy was also approved. Gabay, Director of the Planning and Entrepreneurship Promotion Division at the Ministry of Tourism, has a legal education and holds two Master’s degrees—in Geography and Human Environment, as well as in Public Policy. She has over two years of managerial experience and has held several senior positions in public service.
The appointments committee also approved her appointment, noting that she, like Ron-Tal, signed an agreement to prevent conflicts of interest, which includes reference to her additional role as Chair of the Metro Authority’s Regulatory Council.
Emphasis on Gender Representation and Other Populations
In the explanatory notes to the government, it was stated that out of the nine currently serving council members, six are women and three are men. The committee emphasized the need for adequate representation in future appointments, particularly of women, Arabs, and people with disabilities. An additional candidate from the public, belonging to the population of people with disabilities, was recently submitted for review.
The legal opinion attached to the nomination proposal states that there is no legal impediment to the appointments, and all stages of the process were conducted in accordance with the law.
