How to Avoid Airport Crowds? Tips for Flying on Busy Days
Airport crowds are incredibly annoying, especially in peak seasons like holidays and summer vacations. Some people love the time at the airport, and with some justification – I always say it’s part of the trip. But unusual crowding can really ruin the experience, not to mention, heaven forbid, missing a flight because of lines or not allowing enough time. To ensure a smooth flight experience and save precious time, we’ve prepared an updated guide to dealing with airport crowds. Maybe it’ll help someone a little – maybe 🙂

When Are Airports Busiest?
- Holiday periods: Passover, Sukkot and the December holidays are especially busy times.
- Summer season: many people go on family holidays, which causes heavy crowding.
- Weekends: Thursday evening and Friday morning flights are among the most in demand.
How to Prepare in Advance and Save Time?
- Check in early: many airlines offer online check-in, which saves time waiting at the counters.
- Prepare documents in advance: passport, boarding pass and entry permits for destination countries – keep them accessible.
- Avoid peak hours: if possible, plan flights for less busy times such as midweek.
How to Deal with Long Lines at Security?
- Use fast lanes if available, such as VIP or Fast Track lanes.
- Make sure the liquids in your hand luggage comply with the rules, to avoid unnecessary delays.
- Take off belts, watches and metal items in advance before entering the security scanner.
- If you’re flying without a checked suitcase – with most airlines the process will be much faster: you can arrive with your boarding pass straight to security screening without standing in the counter line. Check with your airline how the process works at the airport you’re flying from.
Airport Services That Can Make the Wait Easier
- Lounges: El Al’s King David Lounge, the Dan Lounge and other lounge services provide a comfortable place to wait.
- Restaurants and cafés: you can use the time to eat or grab a coffee in the various areas.
- Duty-free shops: make use of the wait for good-value shopping at duty free.
It won’t hurt to arrive earlier! I hear lots of people say “why do I need to arrive so early?” You’re right, it might be nicer on the sofa at home. But why not arrive early and not be stressed about lines at Ben Gurion? Worst case, you’ll sit down for a coffee in duty free… also fun! Proper preparation before your flight will help you avoid unnecessary crowds, get through security quickly and enjoy a more pleasant wait before takeoff.
