In the Heart of Manhattan, on the 102nd Floor: Airplane with Israeli Flag Soars on Independence Day
Last Thursday, on the 77th Independence Day of the State of Israel, I stood at the observation deck on the 102nd floor of the One World Tower in Manhattan. The tower is located in Manhattan, New York, built near the site of the Twin Towers, which were destroyed in the September 11 attacks, and stands 541 meters tall. I was admiring the stunning view of New York when I suddenly noticed something extraordinary – a light aircraft flying in the sky with a large Israeli flag trailing behind it, accompanied by the inscription: “Happy Birthday Israel”.
It was a surprising and very special moment. Being so far from home, at such a height, and then seeing the Israeli flag in the New York sky – it made me pause, smile, and feel a quiet pride. Around me, people stopped to take pictures, some asked what was written on the flag, others asked what the flag meant. It was clear that this gesture managed to touch even those who were not part of the Israeli community.
Later, I saw that the documentation of the plane also appeared on social media – including photos and videos from Borough Park, where the plane was also spotted that day. I still do not know who is behind this initiative, but there is no doubt that it is a unique gesture – one that you don’t see every day.
I managed to take a few not-so-good pictures. As mentioned, I was standing at a higher floor than the plane was flying, and the flag in the picture appears relatively small compared to its actual size.
