Don’t Do This! The 7 Biggest Mistakes Israelis Make Abroad

Traveling abroad is always a fun experience, but there are some common mistakes Israelis make abroad that can cost you money, time, and unnecessary stress. So just before you board the plane, here are the things to avoid:

1. Not Checking Visa Requirements in Advance

Israelis are used to traveling to many countries without a visa with their blue passport, but there are places where a visa is required in advance – and without it, you’ll simply be sent back home. Classic examples: the USA (requires ESTA), India (electronic visa), and China (physical visa at the embassy).

2. Relying Solely on Credit Cards and Forgetting Cash

There are countries where credit cards are less common (hello, Japan!) or places where payments are mainly made in cash (markets, taxis). It’s always better to have a certain amount of local currency to avoid being stuck without a way to pay.

3. Not Checking the Airline’s Baggage Policy

Flying low-cost? Check the baggage policy thoroughly! Many Israelis arrive at the airport with oversized carry-ons or without checking in advance and end up paying hefty fines. The rule is simple: check in advance and ensure you don’t pay dearly.

4. Booking a Hotel Far from the Center to “Save Money”

True, a hotel in the suburbs is cheaper, but if every trip to the city takes an hour and costs 20 euros each way – you haven’t really saved. Sometimes it’s better to pay a bit more and stay in a convenient location, close to public transport and major attractions.

5. Behaving Like a “Typical Israeli” and Being Noisy

Israelis sometimes forget they are not in their home country – and can be loud in restaurants, streets, and hotels. It’s advisable to respect the locals and public space, especially in countries where quieter behavior is expected.

6. Not Properly Checking Travel Insurance

Many Israelis purchase travel insurance without reading the fine print – only to find out it doesn’t cover important things like flight cancellation, baggage loss, or extreme sports. Before buying – check all the clauses! Worse yet, I hear a lot about Israelis who don’t get any travel insurance abroad on some trips, which is much worse. Don’t fly without travel insurance abroad. It’s critical.

7. Forgetting to Check Local Laws and Getting into Trouble

In certain countries, there are particularly strict laws – for example, in Singapore, chewing gum on the street is prohibited, in Bangkok, it’s forbidden to talk about the king, and in Dubai, it’s advisable to be cautious regarding public behavior. It’s a shame to get into legal trouble abroad over something trivial.
