Cracking Down on Illegal Taxi Operators at Ben Gurion Airport
The Israel Airports Authority reports that in a relentless fight against illegal taxi operators (“pirates”) at Ben Gurion Airport, a severe verdict was handed down last week against a taxi driver who committed numerous traffic violations at the airport, exploiting a disabled parking permit.
86 Traffic Violations – and a Fine of 86,000 NIS
In the ruling (14721-08-23) issued by the Central District Traffic Court, Judge Amit Bar convicted the driver of 86 instances of illegal parking at Ben Gurion Airport—all committed within just four months. His license was suspended for 14 days, and he was ordered to pay a hefty fine of 86,000 NIS or serve 60 days in prison. Additionally, he was fined 3,000 NIS for breaching a previous commitment, with an additional 20,000 NIS penalty imposed for any repeat offenses.
The Driver Circumvented Regulations – Exploiting a Disabled Parking Permit
The driver repeatedly parked his vehicle in the red-and-white zone adjacent to Terminal 3, bypassing the regulated taxi queue. Despite an administrative restraining order against him, he continued to enter Ben Gurion Airport, presenting a disabled parking permit and claiming the parking was allowed. The court rejected his claims, ruling that it was a blatant abuse of the law for purely financial motives. The judge stated, “This improper use not only fails to promote equality but also harms those disabled individuals who, unfortunately, must rely on the disabled parking permit.”
Extensive IAA Operations Against Illegal Taxi Operators
According to the Israel Airports Authority, in 2024 alone, over 30 administrative and judicial restraining orders were issued against drivers operating illegally at Ben Gurion Airport. Additionally, more than 2,500 fines were issued, totaling approximately 1.2 million NIS. The authority emphasizes its commitment to taking a firm stance against any driver who continues to operate illegally within the airport grounds. In cases of restraining order violations, legal actions are pursued, and in some instances, drivers have been banned for extended periods of several months.
Clear Message to All Drivers: No Immunity for Deception
Attorney Limor Tanzer, representing the state on behalf of the IAA and under the guidance of the Attorney General, highlighted the severity of the driver’s conduct. The court fully accepted her position, clarifying that the severe penalties are intended to create a financial deterrent and prevent similar incidents from occurring. The ruling stated: “The appropriate punishment is to impose a substantial and heavy economic cost that will deter the defendant from repeating the offenses.”
