Terminal 1 Reopens – and What Is the Busiest Day at Ben Gurion with About 80,000 Passengers?
Passover 2025 is set to be especially hot – and not just in terms of the weather. Israel Airports Authority (IAA) figures point to unprecedented crowds at Ben Gurion Airport, with record-breaking passenger traffic. During April, about 1.8 million passengers are expected to pass through Ben Gurion – a jump of about 65% compared with last year’s Passover. March isn’t far behind, with an impressive 1.4 million passengers, up 60% on the previous year.
Transport Minister: “Israeli Aviation Is Back on Track”
Transport and Road Safety Minister Brig. Gen. (res.) Miri Regev commented on the high numbers: “The opening of Terminal 1, the return of dozens of airlines and the records expected at Passover are part of our effort to ensure convenient and accessible flights for the public. Israeli aviation is back on track, and we’re constantly working to strengthen Ben Gurion and improve passenger service.”
Airlines Are Returning to Israel
Alongside the dramatic rise in passenger traffic, international airlines are also returning to regular operations. After a period of suspension, United Airlines has resumed its flights to Israel, and it’s expected to be followed by Ryanair, Iberia, Delta, British Airways, Air Baltic, Neos, Bulgaria Air and others. The return of these airlines is expected to significantly increase the supply of flights to the most popular destinations.
Terminal 1 Reopens on March 31 – Easing Congestion at Ben Gurion
As part of the holiday preparations, the IAA is bringing Terminal 1 back into operation. It will officially open on March 31 and will serve international and domestic flights after a long period of closure. During April, about 1,400 international flights will depart from Terminal 1 – about 20% of all international activity at the airport. Ben Gurion hopes this move will reduce the extreme congestion expected at Terminal 3 and allow passengers a smoother travel experience.
“Opening the terminal will ease congestion and significantly improve the passenger experience, especially during the holiday season when traffic peaks,” said Minister Regev.
Passover at Ben Gurion: Where Are Israelis Flying?
With high demand for Passover flights, the top destinations among Israelis are Greece, the US, Cyprus, Italy and the United Arab Emirates. The passenger peak will be on Thursday, April 10, when no fewer than 80,000 passengers are expected to pass through Ben Gurion within just 24 hours – a figure never seen before.
Ben Gurion Prepares for the Crowds – More Staff and New Recruits
To cope with the huge number of passengers, the IAA has completed the recruitment of dozens of new employees in its security and operations divisions. Training courses are currently underway for armed guards, security screeners, in-aircraft service staff and more. In addition, veteran employees will reinforce the armed security team to keep passenger flow smooth and efficient.

The IAA recommends that passengers prepare in advance to save time and get through checks quickly:
✅ Check in advance which terminal and floor your flight departs from
✅ Check in from home and download your boarding pass
✅ Print your bag tag at the self-service kiosks
✅ Passengers with carry-on only can use the fast lane in Zone W at Terminals 1 and 3
