The Miracle of Seat 11A: The Sole Survivor of the Ahmedabad Plane Crash
One of the deadliest aviation disasters of the last decade has shaken India and the world: an Air India plane crashed shortly after taking off from the city of Ahmedabad en route to London. According to estimates, at least 240 people were killed, including passengers and crew members, and the tragedy intensified as the plane crashed directly onto a medical student dormitory.
Amidst all the loss – one miracle: The sole survivor from the plane, Vishwak Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British citizen, was rescued alive from the wreckage – seated in 11A.
“I Woke Up and There Were Bodies All Around Me”
Ramesh, holding both British and Indian citizenship, has been residing in London for the past 20 years. He came to India for a family visit, and among the deceased was his brother, who was on the same flight. From his hospital bed, he told Indian reporters:
“30 seconds after takeoff, there was a horrific noise. The plane just plummeted. Everything happened so fast. When I opened my eyes, I saw total destruction – I was surrounded by bodies. Someone pulled me and took me to an ambulance. I am alive – but barely processing what happened.”
A Disaster of Massive Proportions – Also on the Ground
The crash of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner occurred on the morning of Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 11:09 AM Israel time, on flight AI171 which was supposed to land at Gatwick Airport in London. The pilot managed to send a distress signal – but communication was lost within seconds.
The plane crashed into the dormitories of a medical school – striking precisely when students were dining in the cafeteria. At least five students were killed on the scene, and about 50 people were injured with varying degrees of injuries. According to reports, some of the injured are still hospitalized in serious condition. Photos from the scene show aircraft debris scattered among the walls of the destroyed building, with the tail lodged between the upper floors.
Passengers from 4 Countries – and an Ongoing Investigation
According to the airline’s data, the flight, which had 232 passengers and 10 crew members, included 169 citizens from India, 53 from the UK, seven from Portugal, and one passenger from Canada. Indian officials noted that there were also 11 children on board the aircraft. The British Foreign Office announced that it has sent an investigation team to assist and clarify the circumstances of the incident, but according to them, the process is expected to take a long time.
In Israel, it is estimated that there were no Israelis on the flight.
Compensation for Families – and Concerns of Long-term Implications
Air India announced that the company will compensate the families of the deceased and that it is cooperating with Indian and international authorities in the investigation. This is one of the most severe aviation accidents India has experienced in recent years – and its impact is expected to be felt for a long time.
