After particularly tumultuous years for Israel’s tourism industry, the first signs of change are beginning to appear, primarily from one direction: the United States. According to data from the Ministry of Tourism presented in the publication, more than 32,000 American tourists arrived in Israel during the month of June, and by July, the number had already climbed to over 36,000. The implication is particularly interesting: tourists from the United States currently constitute about a third of all international entries to Israel. The numbers are still far from the peak periods of incoming tourism, but after a prolonged period of conflict, flight cancellations, and uncertainty, the trend provides a bit of optimism for an industry that has been severely affected in recent years.
After Difficult Years: American Tourists Return
The Israeli tourism industry has experienced an almost unimaginable sequence of crises in recent years. First, there was the COVID-19 pandemic, which nearly completely paralyzed global tourism. After the recovery period, the security events at the end of 2023 again led to a sharp decline in the number of tourists and flight cancellations by foreign companies. Hotels, tour guides, restaurants, attractions, and many businesses that rely on incoming tourism had to cope for a long time with a reality entirely different from what they knew. According to the data presented in the publication, Israel’s revenues from foreign tourism in the first half of 2026 amounted to approximately 700 million dollars. Still, the gradual increase in the number of visitors from the United States may be one of the first signs that the picture is beginning to change.
Why Are the Americans Returning?
In the case of American tourism to Israel, it is not just about regular vacations. For some visitors, the trip is related to postponed family events, bar and bat mitzvah celebrations, heritage tours, family visits, and community delegations. For others, simply arriving in Israel at this time is also seen as an expression of support and solidarity. Despite the need for more complex planning and the security reality that has affected tourism in recent years, many Americans are already returning every month.
The Big Problem Still Lies in the Skies
One of the factors delaying a more significant recovery of incoming tourism is the availability of flights. Air activity between the United States and Israel is still affected by changes in the flight schedules of international companies, and therefore the options available to an American tourist wanting to reach Israel are more limited compared to regular periods. Some passengers arrive via direct flights of Israeli companies, while others do so with a stopover at one of the airports in Europe. As the supply of direct flights increases and more international companies return to regular operations, the industry hopes that the path to Israel will become simpler—and that competition over ticket prices will increase.
36,000 a Month – What’s Next?
The increase from more than 32,000 American tourists in June to over 36,000 in July is still just the beginning of a potential recovery. Israel’s tourism industry is far from a full return to the tourist numbers that characterized it in the good years, so it is too early to declare the crisis over. But for hotels, tour guides, restaurants, and tourist sites, every plane arriving with more tourists from abroad is important news. And the fact that about a third of international entries to Israel currently come from the United States again illustrates the enormous importance of the American market to local tourism.
First Signs of a Return to Normalcy
The big question now is whether the trend will continue in the coming months. If the situation allows it, and if the number of flights from the United States and other destinations continues to grow, Israel may see more and more tourists returning to the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, to tourist sites in the north, to the Dead Sea, and to other tourist centers across the country. In the meantime, at least from the United States, the first signs are already here: the tourists are starting to return.
