Agios Nikolaos is a resort town in eastern Crete, built around Lake Voulismeni and a small harbor. As a result, it makes an ideal base for exploring beaches, villages, and excursions in the Lasithi area.
Lake Voulismeni and the Town Center
The lake sits at the heart of town, surrounded by cafes and restaurants. From here, you can continue on to the harbor, the promenade, and the commercial streets. Note that the town is fairly compact, though some streets are hilly.
Beaches in the Area
Near the town, you’ll find urban beaches plus a few coves within driving distance. However, service quality, parking, and accessibility vary from beach to beach. So, choose based on wind conditions, crowd levels, and how suitable a beach is for children.
Excursions from Eastern Crete
You can combine visits to Elounda, the island of Spinalonga, Lasithi villages, and archaeological sites. Cruises, however, depend on the season and sea conditions. So it’s worth checking schedules and booking tickets in advance.
Where to Stay
Staying in the center is convenient for dining and walking tours. Meanwhile, hotels outside town often offer their own beaches and facilities but require a car or taxis. Either way, check parking availability and the actual distance from the beach.
When to Visit
May, June, September, and early October suit a mix of beach time and excursions. July and August, by contrast, are hotter and busier. Outside peak season, some services and cruises may not run at all.
