ITA Airways Lufthansa Group Deal Now Official
The ITA Airways Lufthansa Group deal is now official. Italy’s flag carrier has formally joined the Lufthansa Group. Deutsche Lufthansa AG acquired 41% of the company’s shares.
What the Deal Includes
The deal closed yesterday (Friday). It included a capital increase of €325 million. This cements the airline’s place inside the Lufthansa Group. With the deal complete, ITA becomes the group’s fifth airline, alongside Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss, and Brussels Airlines. The move broadens the routes and services available to passengers across Europe.
ITA Airways Lufthansa Group: A Bigger Footprint in Europe
Adding an Italian carrier gives the group a real edge in the European market. It also strengthens the group’s footprint across the Mediterranean, where the carrier already runs a strong domestic network. Analysts expect the merger to bring tighter scheduling between the airlines. They also expect shared maintenance and procurement savings over time.
Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr commented on the move: “We look forward to continuing the impressive success story of the airline together with our Italian partners. This is an opportunity to enhance the customer experience and expand the services offered.”
What It Means for Travelers
Customers of both the airline and the Lufthansa Group should see joint programs soon. Some may arrive as early as the summer flight schedule. The shift should improve the travel experience with more destinations and services. Frequent flyers may also benefit from expanded mileage partnerships and smoother connections between Rome, Milan, and the group’s major hubs.
This deal has been years in the making. It follows an earlier phase in which Lufthansa held a smaller stake. That stake grew into a controlling 41 percent share this year.
