A fire broke out today at the Eiffel Tower in Paris after a cable burned in one of the elevators.
Paris firefighters managed to bring the fire under control, and about 1,200 people were evacuated from the Eiffel Tower.
The difficulty in dealing with the fire was access to the shaft where it broke out. At the start of the incident, firefighters were unable to reach the location of the fire itself, while in the meantime 1,200 people were evacuated – in accordance with a well-known, predefined Eiffel Tower procedure for fires or terror attacks. The cause of the fire was apparently one of the elevator cables overheating.
The Eiffel Tower is well equipped with safety systems, including fire detectors and fire suppression. The evacuation procedure is well known and organized for the tower’s staff, which receives about 25,000 visitors a day.
