Heraklion serves as the main gateway to Crete and is a vibrant urban center featuring a port, museums, and access to Knossos. It is ideal for a first or last night stay, but also serves as a base for exploring the central and eastern parts of the island. The Center and Port
In the center of Heraklion, you can stroll through shopping streets, squares, and the Venetian port. The Koules Fortress is a prominent landmark, with varying opening hours. The city remains active year-round, unlike seasonal resort areas.

Located outside the city center, Knossos is considered the main site in the area. In summer, it’s advisable to arrive early due to heat and crowds. Combining a guide or background material can enhance understanding of the site, and it’s important to check tickets and hours in advance.
The Archaeological Museum
The museum in Heraklion complements the visit to Knossos by showcasing findings from the Minoan culture. It’s recommended not to rush through both sites in a short time frame. On a hot day, the museum offers a comfortable indoor activity.
Beaches Near Heraklion
Amoudara is relatively accessible from the city and offers a beach and amenities. Areas like Hersonissos and Malia are located eastward and are more suited for a vacation, though the atmosphere and crowd levels differ. Choose according to the travelers’ age and vacation style.
Where to Stay
For a short stay, choose the city center or an area with easy airport access. For a beach vacation, it may be preferable to stay outside the city. Check for parking, noise, and actual distance from a bus station, especially if you don’t have a car.
Day Trips
