Ramon Airport – A New Gateway to Eilat and the South
Ramon Airport, located about 19 km north of Eilat, was designed to upgrade the flying experience to southern Israel and serve as an alternative to the airports in Eilat and Ovda. It’s an ambitious national project named after astronaut Ilan Ramon and his son, Assaf Ramon, in recognition and commemoration of their great contribution to the country.
Background and Construction: A National Project in the Desert
With an investment of about NIS 1.8 billion and advanced planning, Ramon Airport was built to meet aviation needs in the south. The airport’s runway extends 3.6 km, allowing it to host large aircraft and even long-haul international flights. The terminal covers 34,000 square meters and was built with the option of expanding as needs grow in the future. The technological systems were also installed to the highest standards, including a self-screening system for passengers.
Ramon Airport’s Operations and Challenges
When Ramon Airport opened, it was expected to become a hub for many international flights, but in practice the airport still faces various challenges. Airlines such as Ryanair began operating international routes, but the number of international flights is still limited compared with the original expectations. Nevertheless, in emergencies, such as during Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021, Ramon Airport proved its ability to serve as an alternative to Ben Gurion, when it was proposed to divert flights there in cases of rocket fire toward central Israel.
The Airport’s Impact on Eilat and the South
One of the main goals of Ramon Airport is to contribute to Eilat’s economy and strengthen tourism to the city. However, its distance from Eilat – about a 20-minute drive – and the lack of convenient public transport are a challenge in themselves. The closure of Sde Dov in Tel Aviv in 2019 affected domestic routes to Eilat and highlighted the need to strengthen routes to Ramon Airport to improve connectivity.
Looking Ahead: Potential Still Waiting to Be Realized
To realize Ramon Airport’s full potential, more state support and further investment in transport infrastructure are needed. There’s room to improve passenger services and encourage airlines to expand the number of routes operating at the airport. The airport could certainly become a major aviation gateway in the south and contribute to the region’s economic and social growth.
