The solar eclipse occurring next summer is expected to become one of the major tourism events of 2027. Airlines are already reporting a surge in bookings, and in some of the sought-after destinations in Spain, hotel rooms are beginning to disappear – even though almost a full year remains. On August 2, 2027, the moon will pass between the Earth and the sun, creating a total solar eclipse, which at its peak will last 6 minutes and 23 seconds. This may sound brief, but in terms of solar eclipses, it is an exceptionally long and rare event. During these minutes, the skies will darken in the middle of the day, the temperature may drop, and bright stars could appear in the sky. Those standing directly in the path of totality will see the moon completely cover the sun, with the sun’s corona glowing around it.

Bookings Are Already Surging

According to EasyJet data, since the solar eclipse observed in August 2026, there has been an increase of about 70% in bookings to destinations from which the full eclipse of 2027 can be viewed. Demand for flights to cities in Spain, including Seville, Malaga, and Almeria, has risen by about 69%. Increases have also been recorded in bookings to Gibraltar and destinations in North Africa. Hotels are also starting to fill up. A check conducted by Euronews for dates close to the eclipse in Seville showed a message indicating that about 87% of the accommodations checked are already unavailable. The data may still change, but the message is clear: People are not waiting until the last minute and are starting to plan their vacation almost a year in advance.

Where Can the Total Eclipse Be Seen?

The eclipse path will pass through southern Spain, Gibraltar, and parts of North Africa and the Middle East. Among the prominent places where the total eclipse can be observed:

  • Malaga, Marbella, and Cadiz in southern Spain
  • Gibraltar
  • Tangier in Morocco
  • Regions in Algeria and Tunisia
  • Benghazi in Libya
  • Luxor and southern Egypt
  • Areas in western Saudi Arabia and Yemen

The duration of darkness will not be the same everywhere. In Malaga, for example, the total eclipse is expected to last slightly less than two minutes. In Gibraltar, it will last about four and a half minutes, while in the Luxor area of Egypt, it will be possible to observe more than six minutes of total eclipse.

What Will Be Seen in Israel?

Even those who remain in Israel will be able to observe the event, but from here, the eclipse will only be partial. In Jerusalem, the eclipse is expected to begin around 11:40 AM, reach its peak near 1:00 PM, and end around 2:18 PM. At the peak of the event, the moon will cover approximately 80% of the sun’s surface. Exact times and coverage percentages may vary slightly between different areas in the country. It is still expected to be a very impressive phenomenon, but the skies in Israel will not darken completely as will happen in places within the path of totality.

Is It Worth Booking a Vacation Specifically?

For those who want to experience a total solar eclipse at least once in their lifetime, this is an exceptional opportunity. Southern Spain is likely the most convenient option for the Israeli tourist: it has developed tourism infrastructure, a variety of accommodations, and the possibility to combine the event with a family vacation in Andalusia. However, it is advisable to carefully check the location of the hotel. Not every place in Spain is within the path of totality, and even a difference of tens of kilometers can affect the duration of darkness – or turn a total eclipse into a partial one. It is also recommended to book accommodation with a cancellation option, monitor the cloud forecast as the date approaches, and not rely on just one viewing point.

Important: Do Not Look at the Sun Without Proper Protection

Do not look directly at the sun using regular sunglasses, a camera, binoculars, or a telescope without a dedicated filter. For safe viewing, use standard eclipse glasses or professional equipment intended for solar viewing. Regular sunglasses, even if they are very dark, do not provide adequate protection and can cause severe eye damage.

In Summary

If you have always wanted to see a solar eclipse, it’s worth marking August 2, 2027 now. You don’t have to book immediately, but it is definitely worth starting to check flights and accommodations – especially in southern Spain and Gibraltar. The event itself will last only a few minutes. The race for the best rooms, it seems, has already begun.
