36 Tourists from three Orthodox Jewish families found themselves on a dangerous slope in the Solden area of the Austrian Alps, after reportedly straying off the path without appropriate equipment for a mountainous hike. Two helicopters and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, and the incident concluded without injuries, though the bill could reach thousands of euros. A family trip in the Austrian Alps ended with a complex and costly rescue operation: 36 tourists, including small children and infants, required assistance after becoming stranded in a mountainous area at an altitude of approximately 2,300 meters near Solden in Austria. According to a report by Farber in BeChadrei, the group consisted of three Orthodox Jewish families, including citizens from Belgium, Austria, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Fortunately, all group members were rescued safely and no one was injured. However, the tourists are now expected to bear the costs of the rescue operation, which could amount to thousands of euros.

Set Out with Strollers – Ended Up on a Dangerous Slope

According to published details, the group embarked on the hike without equipment suitable for mountainous conditions, including strollers with children and infants. The original plan was likely to descend via a wide forest path, but at some point, the group deviated from the trail and ended up in an exposed and steep area where there was a risk of falling. The conditions made the continuation of the journey particularly dangerous, especially for families hiking with small children and strollers. According to the report, at one point the situation became so complex that one of the children had to cling to rocks to avoid falling.

Two Helicopters Dispatched for Rescue

Around 17:15, two members of the group contacted rescue forces and requested assistance. Following the call, a rescue operation was launched involving two helicopters and ground forces. 14 members of the group, including the youngest children, were evacuated from the area using ropes from helicopters. The remaining 22 tourists were rescued by other means and accompanied on foot by rescue team members until they safely reached the valley. At the end of the operation, all 36 tourists were rescued without injuries.

“A Common Mistake by Inexperienced Tourists”

According to Farber’s publication, local rescue commander Jakob Figl described the incident as a particularly common mistake among tourists inexperienced with the area’s terrain conditions. The case highlights how a path that initially seems simple and accessible can quickly become dangerous when deviating from the marked trail, especially at high altitudes and when hiking with toddlers.

The Rescue Ended Safely – Now Comes the Bill

The story also has an unpleasant financial side. According to the report, the tourists are expected to bear the full cost of the rescue operation. Considering the deployment of two helicopters and ground rescue teams, this is an expense that could amount to thousands of euros. Thus, a family trip that began in the Austrian Alps ended not only with a dramatic rescue from the mountain but likely also with a significant bill for the families. Most importantly: despite the dangerous conditions and the unusual scope of the rescue operation, none of the 36 group members were injured.
