The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has officially granted United Airlines approval this week to install SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet system on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This marks the first aircraft in the airline’s main fleet to be equipped with this technology, with the inaugural flight scheduled for October 15, 2025, from Newark Liberty International Airport in New York.
First Installation in United’s Main Fleet
The new approval is part of United’s ongoing installation project initiated at the beginning of the year, equipping its aircraft with SpaceX’s Starlink system—a high-speed satellite internet system designed for in-flight use. So far, the system has been installed on more than half of the airline’s regional aircraft, and it is now being extended to the main fleet.
The first installation on a Boeing 737-800 was completed in recent days, and following FAA approval, the first flight is expected to take place on October 15.
Complimentary Internet Service for MileagePlus Members
The Starlink system provides high-speed internet connectivity during flights, enabling access to streaming services, browsing, online shopping, and gaming. United notes that the service will be offered at no cost to members of its frequent flyer program, MileagePlus. Enrollment in the program is free through the airline’s official website.
According to the company, more than 90% of passengers on regional flights with Starlink rated their browsing experience as good.
Technical Advantages: Easier Installation and Fuel Savings
Among the advantages offered by the system are its lower weight compared to previous systems, high durability in weather conditions, and relatively quick installation. According to United, these features are expected to contribute to reduced fuel consumption and simplify maintenance procedures.
Comprehensive Certification Process
The system’s certification includes an examination of design, installation, and safe operation by the FAA for each aircraft model it is intended to be installed on. United states that the goal is to install Starlink on all major and regional aircraft types in its fleet—a total of more than 16 different models.
