Zurich Doubles Security Budget for Jewish Institutions Amid Security Alerts

In response to increasing threats of attacks and concerns from Swiss intelligence services, the city of Zurich plans to double its security budget for the Jewish community from 1 million to 2 million Swiss francs annually. This decision, prompted by the tense security situation since the outbreak of the war in Israel, is expected to take effect retroactively from the beginning of 2024.

Worrying Trend: Rise in Threats Against Jewish Institutions

This move follows growing concern among Zurich’s Jewish community, particularly after the escalation of the security situation in Israel and its reflection in Europe. According to the Swiss Federal Intelligence Service (NDB), there is an increased likelihood of extreme events and terrorist acts, including those targeting religious institutions and minority communities. Consequently, the city is required to enhance security at Jewish institutions, primarily synagogues and community buildings.

Zurich Municipality: Investing in Security and Daily Life

The municipality stated that doubling the budget will allow for a broader deployment of security and protection measures. This includes the placement of security guards, surveillance cameras, and additional technological solutions that will enable the community to continue living a normal life despite the threats.

Not Alone: Canton and Federal Government Also Contribute

Alongside the Zurich municipality, the Zurich Canton government has also announced it will double its budgetary contribution from 1 to 2 million francs. Additionally, the Swiss federal government participates in the security expenses for Jewish institutions nationwide, as part of a national understanding of the need for focused protection.

Awaiting Approval: City Council to Decide Soon

The request is currently on the city council’s table and is expected to be discussed and voted on in one of its upcoming meetings. If approved, it will take effect retroactively from the beginning of 2024, allowing for an immediate and significant enhancement of the security framework around Jewish institutions in Zurich.
