Major Change Ahead? Soon You’ll Receive Flight Cancellation Notices by Phone

The Knesset plenum today approved in a preliminary reading a bill expected to change the rules for passengers: notifications of flight cancellations or schedule changes will be sent through three channels – SMS, email, and phone call.

51 Knesset members supported the bill submitted by MK Eliyahu Baruchi, against 50 opponents – and the proposal will now be forwarded to the Economic Affairs Committee for discussion.

The bill seeks to amend the Aviation Services Law (Compensation and Assistance for Flight Cancellation or Change of Conditions), so that instead of relying solely on SMS or email notifications, companies will be required to also update passengers via phone call. The notification will be considered delivered if the passenger confirms receipt, or if it is sent through all three channels on three different occasions.

The explanatory notes to the proposal state that many notifications currently do not reach their destination – whether due to being abroad, an outdated phone number, or emails automatically going to spam. The law, enacted back in 2012, does not define the method of notifying passengers – often leaving them uninformed and without compensation.

Will the new law put an end to the situation where passengers discover their flight cancellation at the last minute? Time will tell – but one thing is certain: soon airlines will be required to show much more responsibility.
