Ioannina is a charming city in northwestern Greece, situated on the shores of Lake Pamvotida. It serves as a convenient stop on the way to the Zagori villages and the Epirus region, yet it is worth dedicating a day or two to explore it on its own.

What to Do in Ioannina?

Stroll along the lake and within the castle, where you will find alleys and museums. Boats depart to the small island in the lake, subject to weather conditions and the activity schedule. The Perama Cave is located near the city and is suitable for a short visit.

A Base for Epirus Tours

Ioannina is a convenient starting point for trips to the Zagori villages, Vikos Gorge, and the stone bridges. Travel on the mountainous roads is slower than it appears on the map, so it is advisable not to cram several areas into one day.

When to Visit?

Spring and autumn are pleasant for touring. Summer is hot, but evenings by the lake can be comfortable. Winter is cold and rainy, with occasional snow in the mountains.

Transportation and Accommodation

The city center is suitable for walking. A car is useful for nature trips, but it is advisable to check parking availability near your accommodation. Those arriving without a car should plan buses or tours in advance.

Useful Tip

Check opening hours and boat schedules on the day of your visit. General information for destinations in Greece is available on the Visit Greece website, and local conditions should be verified with the operator.
