Local SIM, International SIM, or Data Package from Home – What’s Best When Traveling Abroad?

One of the main concerns for travelers heading abroad is internet connectivity: how to surf, how much it costs, and whether it’s really necessary to constantly search for Wi-Fi.
We have tried to compile almost everything you need to know about connecting to the internet abroad – with a comparison of the three main solutions: local SIM, international SIM, and a data package through your cellular provider in Israel. (And a bit about eSIM)

Data Package from Home – Most Convenient, Not Always the Most Cost-Effective

Most cellular companies in Israel offer data packages for abroad. The package is automatically activated upon landing abroad and usually includes between 5 to 15 GB of data. Of course, there are also more expensive packages that include larger data volumes.

Advantages:

• Convenience: No need to change SIMs or understand anything technical.

• Retention of the Israeli number.

• Sometimes there are additional benefits for existing customers.

Disadvantages:

• The price is relatively high – in some cases 2 or 3 times that of a local SIM, and of course compared to eSIM.

• Usually a significant limitation on data volume.

• Risk of overages and surprising charges if not monitored.

Local SIM – A Great Solution for Longer Stays

A local SIM is a SIM card from a cellular company in the country you are traveling to. It can usually be purchased at the airport, a kiosk, or a local communication store.

Advantages:

• Particularly cost-effective, especially in Europe, Asia, and South America.

• Very large data volume – sometimes tens of GB for only 10–20 dollars.

• Suitable for long stays.

Disadvantages:

• Need to find a store and deal with the local language.

• A completely new local number.

• Not always suitable for Israelis who want to keep in touch with their regular number. (WhatsApp does remain on the Israeli number)

• Requires SIM replacement and sometimes reconfiguration.

International SIM (or eSIM) – A Growing Midway Solution

An international SIM is a physical or digital SIM (eSIM) that allows surfing in several countries – usually by connecting to local networks according to the destination.

Advantages:

• Can be ordered in advance from home.

• Very cheap!

• Works in various destinations – excellent for those moving between countries.

• eSIM saves the need to remove the existing physical SIM.

Disadvantages:

• Requires basic knowledge for activation.

• Some SIMs are limited to certain countries only.

• Prices vary according to data volume and travel destinations.

• eSIM usually provides a solution for internet browsing only without cellular calls. If WhatsApp is sufficient for you, it can be an excellent solution.
