Southern Airspace Closed, Flights Halted, Passengers Evacuated – Minor Injuries and Anxiety Cases at the Scene
An unusual security incident occurred today (Sunday, 07.09) at Ramon Airport in the Arava, when a UAV launched from Yemen struck the arrivals hall of the terminal. According to the Israel Airports Authority spokesperson, following the incident, the southern airspace was closed to aircraft movement, and takeoffs and landings at Ramon were halted.
Magen David Adom reported that at 14:35, a report was received at the 101 center about a UAV crash in the airport area. Paramedics provided medical treatment to a 50-year-old man who was lightly injured by shrapnel in his lower body. Additionally, several anxiety victims were treated on-site.
“Miraculously, the Incident Ended Without Loss of Life”
Eilat Mayor Eli Lankri arrived at the scene immediately upon receiving the report, along with the city’s emergency department head, Ilan Hadida. Lankri emphasized that the incident occurred without prior warning, stating, “This is a failure that requires immediate investigation.”
“Unfortunately, the threat from the Houthis continues to be real and dangerous, not only for Eilat but for the entire State of Israel,” Lankri added. “With the shipping route to Eilat still blocked and the seaport shut down, this is a severe economic blow that must be addressed with strength and determination.”
Security and Rescue Forces Operated at the Scene
Upon hearing the explosion, firefighting and rescue teams from the Ramon station, located at the airport entrance, acted swiftly, assisted by additional teams, security, and emergency personnel.
