**Heathrow Chaos: Canceled Flights and Hundreds of Millions in Losses Impact Global Aviation**
Severe disruptions at London’s Heathrow Airport are causing massive economic losses and widespread disturbances across the international aviation network. Airlines are projected to incur losses amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars due to flight cancellations, delays, and the necessity for extensive operational adjustments. This morning, El Al’s flight to Heathrow was also canceled.
Airlines, which rely on precise logistical systems for scheduling aircraft and crews, are now forced to reorganize flight schedules and relocate crews and planes to other global locations—a process that could take days or even weeks.
According to a Heathrow spokesperson, “The focus right now is on minimizing the impact on airlines and employees—this is a significant operational challenge.”
On Friday, shares of airlines operating from Heathrow plummeted. The stock of British Airways’ parent company, International Airlines Group, initially dropped by 5%, later stabilizing at a decline of about 1.1%. Investment bank Jefferies noted that one of the largest expenses facing the company will be passenger compensation. Lufthansa’s shares fell by 1.6%, and Air France-KLM’s stock dropped by 1.5%. Australia’s Qantas ended the trading day with a 2.4% decrease.
British Airways announced that it is redirecting incoming flights to alternative airports in the UK and advised passengers not to travel to Heathrow until further notice. “The situation is significantly affecting our operations and our customers, and we are working to update passengers on alternative options as much as possible,” the company stated.
United Airlines from the US reported that seven of its aircraft were either returned to their point of origin or diverted to other airports. All of the airline’s flights to Heathrow on Friday were canceled.
Singapore Airlines reported that three flights destined for London were redirected—two to Frankfurt and Paris, and one returned to Singapore. Additionally, five more flights were canceled.
Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong also canceled several flights on the London route.
Qantas from Australia stated that two flights departing from Singapore and Perth en route to London were diverted to Paris.
Air India announced on social media platform X that all its flights to Heathrow were canceled on Friday.
Virgin Atlantic also declared that all its flights arriving or departing from Heathrow until Friday noon were canceled, with the remaining flights subject to review.
As mentioned, El Al’s flight scheduled for this morning to Heathrow was canceled.
A Heathrow spokesperson reported: “Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage across the airport due to a major fire at a nearby electrical substation. While firefighting teams respond to the incident, we do not have a clear timeline on when power can be reliably restored. To ensure the safety of our passengers and colleagues, we have no choice but to close Heathrow. Expect significant disruptions in the coming days, and passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until it reopens.
