A week in Montenegro is sufficient for a diverse itinerary connecting the Bay of Kotor, the Adriatic coast, and the mountainous region. The country may be small on the map, but the winding roads suggest it’s best not to change hotels every night. For flight deals, it’s most cost-effective to book through Flight Hunter.
Days 1–2: Kotor and the Bay
Begin in Kotor, exploring the old town and ascending to a viewpoint depending on the weather and fitness level. On the second day, travel to Perast and consider a short boat trip if sea conditions and operations allow. Staying two nights in the area saves on packing and travel time.
Day 3: Budva and Sveti Stefan
Continue along the coast to Budva, visit the old town, and leave time for the beach. The viewpoint over Sveti Stefan is beautiful even without entering the complex. In summer, start early due to traffic and parking challenges.
Day 4: Lake Skadar
Lake Skadar is ideal for boating, sightseeing, and exploring small villages. You can reach it via Virpazar and choose a boat trip length that suits your family. Check the weather and wind forecast, and avoid long drives north on the same day.
Days 5–6: Žabljak and Durmitor
The drive north quickly changes the scenery. In the Žabljak area, combine visits to the Black Lake, scenic roads, and short trails. The mountain weather is cool and variable even in summer, so pack warm layers and check road conditions.
Day 7: Return to the Airport

Car Rental and Accommodation
For the complete itinerary, renting a car is convenient, but check insurance, parking, and border crossing policies if planning to leave the country. Logical bases are two or three nights in the bay, one or two nights on the coast, and two nights in the mountains.
When to Travel
May, June, and September are generally comfortable for a combined itinerary. In July and August, the coast is crowded, and in late spring or fall, mountain roads may be affected by weather.
