Kulula Air: A Story of Ups and Downs with a Smile
When I arrived at Cape Town airport for the first time for a flight with Kulula Air, I didn’t really know what to expect. Honestly? I’m not sure anyone did. Kulula Air was a South African airline that started operating in 2001. From the very beginning it was clear they were here to change the rules of the game.
A Light-Hearted Start
Kulula Air wasn’t just a cheap airline, it was an experience. If you ever boarded one of their bright green planes, you probably experienced their unique humor. On the first flight I took with them, the flight attendants’ announcements were a real comedy show. For example, when talking about the emergency exits, they said: “In case of emergency, exit first and leave behind expensive personal items such as partners and iPhones.” And it really made us laugh.
Cheap Flights Without Compromising on Fun
Kulula Air managed to make flights cheap and accessible to everyone, without giving up on the experience. It was the first airline in South Africa to offer flights at prices anyone could truly afford. But what really set them apart was their unique approach – everything was done with a smile, from the service and the writing on the planes to the color of the planes themselves.
The Crash (Not of the Planes – of the Company)
But like many good things, hard times came here too. The COVID-19 pandemic hit Kulula hard. Fewer flights, fewer passengers, and in the end they had to stop operating in 2022. It was sad to see them fall, especially after all the years they brought so much joy to aviation.
So What Did We Learn?
The story of Kulula Air teaches us one clear thing – humor can be an amazing business tool. They managed to do something different, and they made everyone remember them with a smile. And even when they fell, they did it with style. It was definitely a sad ending, but they left a mark that can’t be forgotten.
What’s Next?
We passengers are left with the memories. And if there’s something I learned from Kulula, it’s that you can do business with lots of smiles and love. Maybe one day they’ll come back, and if they do, I’m sure their smile will be bigger than ever.
